Here are some photos from last week’s IHSA state individual wrestling championships.

Mattoon capped a successful season in which the program:

• recorded the most medalists ever at three

• featured six wrestlers who won regional titles and three who earned sectional titles

• sent nine of its 10 wrestlers from regionals to sectionals

• sent six wrestlers to the state tournament

Two more Mattoon wrestlers came within one win of earning medals.

  • Mattoon’s Leo Meyer wrestles St. Patrick’s Alex Goworowski in the IHSA State wrestling Class 2A 220-pound fifth-place match, Saturday, Febuary 19, 2022. Meyer was defeated by decision, 5-1.
  • Mattoon’s Kiefer Duncan shakes Green Wave wrestling coach Brett Porter after defeating Rochelle’s Caleb Nadiq in the IHSA State wrestling Class 2A 145-pound third place match Saturday, February 19, 2022.
  • Mattoon’s Kiefer wrestles Rochelle’s Caleb Nadiq in the IHSA State wrestling Class 2A 145-pound third place match Saturday, February 19, 2022. Duncan defeated Nadiq to earn third place. He also defeated Nadiq Thursday by decision, 5-2.
  • Mattoon’s Korbin Bateman wrestles Galesburg’s Rocky Almendarez in the IHSA State wrestling Class 2A 126-pound consolation semifinal Saturday, February 19, 2022. Bateman defeated Almendarez, 7-6 to advance to the third place match.
