Mattoon sectional champion Brady Foster pinned his opponent in a Class 2A, 113-pound opening-round match at the IHSA Wrestling Tournament on Thursday at the State Farm Center in Champaign.

Two other sectional champions also won their first-round matches. At 120, Korbin Bateman won by a decision and Kiefer Duncan won by a major decision at 145 pounds.

Leo Meyer recorded two takedowns and a reversal to go ahead 6-1 before pinning his opponent 3:29 into the 220-pound match. And Aidan Spurgeon won his 195-pound match by a 9-3 decision.

“I thought everyone had a good week of practice and looked great in the first round,” Mattoon coach Brett Porter said.

The five Mattoon wrestlers who remain in the winners bracket will compete tonight in a second round for a chance to advance into tomorrow’s semifinals.

“They understand that a win in tonight’s round will guarantee a state medal,” Porter added.
