Korbin Bateman, Kiefer Duncan and Leo Meyer each won their quarterfinal matches Thursday night, clinching a state medal and advancing into the IHSA Class 2A semifinal round set for Friday evening.

Bateman (35-4) came out strong, maneuvering Chicago Heights’ Joey Baranski into position for a pin 32 seconds into his 126-pound match. The sophomore next faces Freeport senior Markel Baker (25-0), a 4-0 winner, in the semifinal.

Duncan (41-2) scored quickly, earning a take down about a minute into the first period and added another with about 21 seconds left in the second period en route to his 5-2 victory over Rochelle senior Caleb Nadig (33-5). The Mattoon senior next faces Montini sophomore Jayden Colon (23-4), a 4-1 winner in his 145-pound quarterfinal.

Leo Meyer (35-9) took a 9-4 lead into the final 34 seconds and then fought off a strong final challenge by Galesburg’s Jeremiah Morris to earn a 9-7 decision and advance in the 220-pound division. Meyer, a junior, next faces Waterloo’s Jordan Sommers (42-0), a 3-2 winner in his quarterfinal match Thursday.

Mattoon senior Brady Foster lost only his second match of the year, a 4-2 decision in triple overtime in the 113-pound quarterfinal to Rochelle freshman Xavier Villalobos (44-5) whom he had defeated 9-1 earlier this season. Foster can earn a medal by winning his next two consolation round matches. It will take three wins for fourth and four wins for third.

Senior Aidan Spurgeon (26-4) was also sent into the consolation rounds, losing 9-3 to Aurora Christian’s Nate Wemstrom (35-5) in a quarterfinal.
