Rebuilding Trojans, Green Wave girls near back of pack in CHS Invitational

Charleston and Mattoon girls cross country placed eighth and 12th, respectively, during the Charleston Invitational at the Panther Trail on Saturday morning.

Charleston girls finished with a total score of 197 points in a meet the featured 13 teams. Mattoon tallied a score od 318.

Whitley Wood clocked at 21 minutes, 20.15 seconds to place 25th for the three-mile race, best for Charleston.

Sophomore Oakley Layton had Mattoon’s best finish, 34th, in 22:40.81.

“It was our first meet of the year,” Mattoon coach Troy Haacke said. “The kids have been working really hard at practice and this is kind of a benchmark starting point.”

Charleston coach Chris Hawk said that race served to measure the team’s level. “Mainly, just kind of trying to figure out where we are at as a team,” Hawks said. “I hope we can use this one as a baseline and build off of it for later in the year.”

Rylea Borgic, from Newton won the race in 19:30.89 while Mahomet placed first with a total score of 38 points.

Both the Matton and Charleston cross country girls team will be back in action next Saturday at the Peoria High School Invitational.
