Lily Ghere scored three goals in the final 12 minutes and Faith Niebrugge chased down a long punt in the wind for one of her four goals as Mattoon routed host Taylorville 9-2 in an Apollo Conference girls soccer game Thursday night.

Ghere, who totaled five goals Thursday, had scored four goals while Niebrugge had added three in the first half Tuesday in an 8-0 win over Lincoln.

Niebrugge now has 17 goals, one more than Ghere, through seven games.

Aided by a strong wind at their backs Thursday, Mattoon jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half. Ghere scored the first goal of the game on an assist by Niebrugge.

A minute later, goalkeeper Anabelle Lee punted the ball to the half line where it bounced over the Taylorville defenders. Niebrugge chased down the punt and scored on a breakaway.

In the 23rd minute, Ghere scored an unassisted goal when she put a 35-yard shot over the Taylorville keeper. Niebrugge finished the first half scoring on an assist from Lexi Denning.

The second half started with Taylorville scoring two unanswered goals to make the score 4-2.  Mattoon slowed Taylorville’s momentum with another goal by Niebrugge that was assisted by Ghere.

In the 60th minute, Niebrugge scored her fourth goal after the Taylorville goalkeeper tried to clear the ball out of the box. The ball hit off Niebrugge’s leg into the goal.

Mattoon sealed the victory when Ghere scored three times in the final 12 minutes.  Her goals came off assists from Anna Jurka and Marley Vanholven and a penalty kick that was earned when Piper Sanders was tripped in the penalty box.

Mattoon (5-2, 3-1 in the Apollo) returns to action Friday at Urbana for a 4:30 kickoff.
