Faith Niebrugge and Lily Ghere combined for seven goals in the first half to lead Mattoon to an 8-0 rout of visiting Lincoln on Tuesday afternoon in girls soccer action.

Niebrugge has now scored 13 goals and assisted on seven others while Ghere has 11 goals and seven assists through six games.

“Faith and Lily have had a great start to the season offensively,” Mattoon coach Ryan Ghere said. “They have played really well together. They are both unselfish in the box and are just happy that the team is playing quality soccer and scoring lots of goals.”

Lily Ghere delivered the first goal just two minutes into the game on an assist from Niebrugge.

The pair combined for another goal just one minute later when Ghere beat the Lincoln goalkeeper on a cross from Niebrugge. 

In the ninth minute, Niebrugge stole the ball at midfield and beat the Lincoln defense on a breakaway to give Mattoon a three-goal lead. 

And four minutes later, Ghere put a corner kick into the penalty box where Niebrugge headed the cross into the top corner of the goal. 

Mattoon continued the scoring in the 18th minute when Niebrugge scored on an assist from Berkley Howell. 

Ghere finished her hat trick just two minutes later after receiving a pass from Chloe Pruitt. Just before halftime, Niebrugge capped off her day with a fourth goal off a pass from Callan Haldorsen. 

Mattoon took a 7-0 lead into halftime.

A minute into the second half, freshman Evie Bell scored her first career varsity goal on an assist from Piper Sanders. 

Anabelle Lee and Nevaeh Laster combined for five saves in goal to preserve the shutout for the Green Wave.

Mattoon is now 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
