Mattoon’s Gunner Laughhunn drilled a grand slam and ripped a three-run double to account for seven of Lake Land’s runs in an 11-10 victory over Carl Sandburg College on Wednesday afternoon.
Lake Land trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth after a two-out error had resulted in the Lakers allowing three runs to score. The Lakers battled back when Chaz Dickerson was hit by a pitch and both Robert Addarich and Brady Macak singled to load the bases, setting up Laughhunn, who ripped a double off a 2-2 pitch into the left-field gap that cleared the bases and tied the score.
Trailing 7-5 entering the bottom of the eighth, the Lakers scored six runs.
Oliver Dunn doubled in a run and scored on a passed ball. Three walks loaded the bases, setting up Laughhunn once again. The freshman utility player hammered the first pitch he saw over the left-field fence for the grand slam that gave Lake Land an 11-6 lead.
This would not be the end of the scoring.
Carl Sandburg scored one run in the eighth and two in the ninth before the Lakers brought in Bradley Wolfe with runners on second and third. The first batter he faced, Ben Higgins hit a sac fly scoring a run and putting a runner on second. However, Wolfe would strike out Sam Scott on four pitches to preserve the victory.
Davis Johnson collected three hits and drove in three runs.
Paul Thoele earned the win, throwing two scoreless innings with a strikeout.
The Lakers are next in action on Thursday when they travel to Rend Lake College for a nine-inning game.
