Mattoon records 4 pins in dual wrestling loss to Centennial

Mattoon posted four pins, but it wasn’t enough as the Green Wave wrestling team lost their first dual this week on Thursday night.

The Green Wave dropped a close match to Champaign Centennial, 42-34.

Mattoon had jumped out to a 12-0 lead behind pins by Ben Capitosti at 138 pounds and Aidan Blackburn at 145 pounds.

But Centennial then took the lead by winning seven matches in a row by pin.

“There’s just a couple of things that we need to clean up like not getting pinned at the very end,” said Mattoon’s Korbin Bateman. “Just being better at the end (of matches) when it matters.”

Bateman pinned his opponent in 1 minute, 40 seconds into his match – the second fastest on the team and the third quickest overall. Gibson had the fastest, a pin 33 seconds into his match.

“I was just trying to finish it off,” Bateman said. “Get the pin. Help the team out with those (six) points.”

Mattoon rallied in its last three matches, posting two more pins – Vincent Gibson at 120 and Korbin Bateman at 132 – and a major decision by Logan Blackburn at 126.
