Lily Ghere scored a game-high 20 points and knocked down four 3-pointers, but Mattoon lost its lead in the third quarter and fell just short in the fourth.

Down by nine, the Green Wave closed within two points, but players missed a few layups and 3-point attempts in the 45-40 girls basketball loss to Effingham.

“The girls gave it everything they had,” Mattoon coach Troy Haacke said. “We rebounded well, ran the floor in transition. We had plenty of open shots. Some just didn’t fall. Effingham runs some good sets and has good shooters. It was a great game and we had opportunity in the fourth we just came up a little short.”
