Mattoon won a second girls golf championship in a row by a single stroke Wednesday.
A week after capturing the Apollo Conference by one stroke, the Green Wave won by the same margin on the same Charleston Country Club course to take the Class 1A IHSA regional.
Sophomore Blair Powers led MHS, recording eight pars and one bogey for an 83, one stroke more than the 82 that had given her second in the Apollo. Teammate Berit Haldorsen finished tied for 11th at 95, followed by Julia Morton (98) and Marley Vanholveln (99).
“I’m happy to advance,” Mattoon coach Natalie Ambuehl said. “The girls didn’t play their best, but it was good enough today. I think most teams had their moments. Back to back (regional championships) for boys and girls!”
The MHS boys earned their regional title Wednesday.
Charleston senior Delaney Meister, meanwhile, took third after posting a round of 83 the included a par on the 471-yard par 5 No. 16 and 10 pars to lift the Trojans into the final sectional qualifying tournament for the 13th straight season. Teammate Madeline Sanders, another senior, shot 88 to finished tied for sixth.
Bailey Wolf carded a 98 and both Mia Tribble and Maci Babbs tied at 126, giving Charleston its fourth team score.
“Delaney and Madeline turned in solid scores,” CHS coach Todd Keating said, “albeit a few strokes higher than they wanted. Bailey Wolfe shot a 97, which is one of her lowest. Those three scores secured this for us.”
Both teams will compete next week in the IHSA sectional scheduled to be played at the Lincoln Elks course in Lincoln.
