Mattoon Sophomore Blair Powers fired a 1-under 72 to take first place and lead the Green Wave to the girls team title in the nine-team John Macek Invitational on Friday at the University of Illinois’s blue course.

Powers finished eight strokes ahead of Effingham’s Sarah Kirk.

Mattoon edged Effingham by a stroke, 342-343.

Julia Morton shot 86 to take seventh while Marley Van Hoveln (92) and Carrigan Hyland (93) rounded out MHS’s scoring.

Charleston also played very well.

Delaney Meister carded a 79 for third place and Madeline Sanders finished a stroke back at 80 for fifth place. Teammates Bailey Wolf (89) and Mia Tribble (98) also helped the Trojans fire a 346, just four strokes off the top team score.

MHS’s Druin ties for 1st in Adkins Classic

Stewart Druin tied for first at another boys golf event this week.

A few days after tying for first in the Apollo Conference championships, Druin shot a 1-under 71 in the Stan Adkins Classic at the Charleston Country Club, helping Mattoon boys take second in the 10-team event Friday.

St. Anthony’s Coen Pennington also shot 71, helping his team take the team title by 12 strokes at 299.

Charleston’s Red team finished fourth, led by Andrew Kuykendall’s 78 for eighth. Zach Craig (82), Hudson Meister (83) and Alex Kuykendall (83) also scored for the Trojans.

Blain Powers and Will Pullen, meanwhile, each fired 79s to bolster Mattoon while Madden Johnson added an 82.
