Buoyed by its success in field events, Charleston Middle captured the boys Class 7-4A state track and field championship in Peoria on Saturday.
Charleston Middle’s Maddux Archibald jumped 5 feet, 6 inches to win the high jump while teammate Jacob Reed leaped 18 feet, 11.25 inches to win the long jump by nearly five inches. CMS’s Dray Sean Eich finished third after leaping 18-5.50.
Eich, who had been seeded sixth, also ran 17.48 to take third in the 110 high hurdles and teammate Aidan Wayne vaulted 8 feet, 9 inches to take third in that event to give CMS 38 total points, 3 1/2 more than runner-up Geneseo Middle and 10 more than third-place Frankfort Hickory Creek.
Charleston Middle scored 32 points in field events.
Mattoon Middle also had two athletes place in the boys 7-4A meet. Mitchell Clapp threw the discus 121 feet, 8 inches to take second and Mattoon’s Jackson Morgan took sixth with a jump of 5-1 in the high jump.
Charleston Middle’s Alex Matheny took third with a heave of 42-9 in the shot put and fourth by tossing the discus 130-6 in Class 8A-4 competition.
In the girls 7-4A meet, Charleston Middle’s Raylin Cox took second in the shot put at 28-7.5.
In girls 8-4A, Mattoon Middle’s Demri Sanders ran 17.59 seconds to finished seventh in the 100 hurdles.
