Mattoon jumped out early and, padded its lead late for an easy IHSA Regional girls basketball semifinal victory over Herrin on Tuesday evening.
Mallory Ramage scored 17 of her game-high 35 points to help give the Green Wave a 29-12 lead after one quarter. After struggles in the second quarter, Mattoon outscored Herrin by 14 in the second half.
Ramage made five 3-pointers, snared six steals, grabbed four rebounds and added four assists.
Faith Niebrugge, meanwhile, had a team-high eight rebounds and added four assists. And Chloe Pruitt chipped in 10 points.
“I am proud of the way everyone played tonight,” said Mattoon coach Amanda Aydt. “I thought we played hard and the players executed on both ends of the floor.”
No. 1 Mattoon advances to Thursday’s regional championship against fourth-seeded Centralia, which beat Marion 53-36 Tuesday night. Herrin had beaten Carbondale, 50-45, last Saturday to advance into this semifinal game.
If Mattoon wins Thursday’s regional final, the Green Wave would next face the winner of Friday’s Troy Triad-Waterloo matchup in a sectional opener set for Feb. 22.
