The postseason seeds and schedules look favorable for the Mattoon girls basketball season.

Mattoon, the No. 6 ranked team in Class 3A in the latest AP Poll, has a somewhat clear path to the Sweet 16.

Let’s start with the IHSA Regional seeds.

Mattoon (27-2) will travel to Herrin on Tuesday to take on the host school, 50-45 winners over Carbondale on Saturday. If Mattoon can win, that will set up a date in the regional championship against the winner of Marion and Centralia, who are the No. 4 and 5 seeds, respectively.

Herrin is 14-14, Marion is 16-13 and Centralia is 20-7 and second in the South Seven Conference.

Centralia will be the favorite against Marion, which has defeated Marion 58-37 and 54-45 this season. While Centralia does have some good wins, they have some bad losses, which include a 20-point loss to Effingham and a 19-point loss to Teutopolis – teams Mattoon has defeated this year.

If Mattoon can make the Bethalto Civic Memorial Sectional, it would likely set up a date with Troy Triad, which is a regional host site. Triad could meet Waterloo in the regional title game.

Triad finished second to Civic Memorial in the Mississippi Valley Conference with a 19-9 overall record. Triad has several similar opponents to Mattoon. Triad lost by 14 points to Taylorville and by 20 points to Teutopolis. The team lost to No. 11 Civic Memorial, 46-40. The Green Wave have twice defeated Taylorville and topped the Wooden Shoes, 50-44, in early January.

So it is likely that Mattoon and Civic Memorial could meet each other in the Sectional Championship, which would be held in Bethalto. Mattoon would be seeking its first IHSA Sectional championship since 1991.
