After winning the Mattoon Holiday Basketball Tournament, the going gets tougher for the Green Wave. Mattoon will play its third straight-ranked opponent in four games after twice beating No. 11 Mahomet. Teutopolis, the No. 9 ranked team in Class 2A according to MaxPreps, will host Class 3A ranked No. 1 Mattoon in non-conference action. The Green Wave were also ranked No., 10 in the most recent Associated Press Poll state girls basketball poll.

Opponent’s History: Teutopolis is where Hall of Fame coach Dennis Koester led the Wooden Shoes to five state championships and nine appearances in the state title game. As a school, Teutopolis has an all-time record of 1,120-212 as a girls basketball program. Since 2006-2007, Laurie Thompson has guided the program after serving as an assistant to Koester. Thompson owns an overall record of 395-106, which includes 13 Regional Championships, nine Sectional Championships, nine Elite 8 appearances, five Final Fours, three third-place finishes, and two appearances in the state championship, where the team finished state runner-up. 

Teutopolis’ Past Results: Teutopolis began the year with wins over Newton, Salem, Centralia and Highland, but dropped a game to Carterville in the Thanksgiving Tournament. The team dropped a 39-38 contest in overtime to state-ranked Pana. After that, the team defeated St. Joseph-Ogdon and Olney. Another loss was to state-ranked Paris, 51-49 on the road. Since then, Teutopolis was a perfect 3-0 at the Charleston Holiday Tournament. 

Teutopolis’ Top Players: Four members of the Wooden Shoes were named to the Charleston Holiday Tournament All-Tournament Team – Kaitlyn Schumacher, Kaylee Niebrugge, Emily Konkel, and Isabella Hardiek. Schumacher appears to be the team’s leading scorer. Her top performances include 16 points against state-ranked Tri-County and 10 points against Paris. Niebrugge led the team with 14 points against Paris, while Hardiek is a top outside shooter. 

Teutopolis’ Team Stats: Teutopolis is averaging 54.7 points per game and allowing 36.2 points.

Mattoon’s Past Results: Mattoon recently claimed their second straight Mattoon Holiday Tournament championship after posting wins over Decatur Eisenhower, Olney, Teutopolis JV, and two wins over state-ranked Mahomet-Seymour. 

Mattoon’s Team Stats: Mallory Ramage claimed the Tournament MVP with her best finish coming in the championship game. Ramage scored 30 points and eclipsed her 2,000th career point at the tournament. Ramage scored 24 points in the first meeting with the Bulldogs, while Lilly Ghere added 17 points. Ramage, Ghere, and Niebrugge were all named to the All-Tournament Team. Mattoon is averaging 61.4 points per game and allowing 36.0 points. Mattoon is currently on a 10-game winning streak.
