Mattoon’s Brock Davee took sixth in the Charleston Invitational on the Panther Trail.
A mile into the race, he led a pack of six runners past the one-mile marker and around the campus pond.
Then, the Green Wave senior said, he hit a wall.
He fell back from the eventual winner, Bismarck’s Eli Mojonnier, who raced to a time of 15 minutes, 36.68 seconds. Mahomet teammates Joseph Scheele and Kyle Nofziger trailed a few seconds later, in 15:39.47 and 15:40.04, respectively.
Davee finished in 16:14.98.
Mattoon’s Sam Ferrar placed 25th in 17:31 and and Luca Carcasi led Charleston’s runners in 17:48 for 31st place.
Mahomet easily won the meet by tallying only 33 points, well ahead of runner-up Champaign Central’s 102. Mattoon finished ninth and Charleston 14th among the 15 full teams at the meet.
“We were without our top five runners today due to illness and another sport’s conflict,” Charleston coach Greg Rogers said. “When we have our team at full strength next weekend at Peoria, we should be more competitive in the team scores.”
Both MHS and CHS will compete in Saturday’s Peoria Invitational that is run on the same course as the state championships.
