Faith Niebrugge set Mattoon High’s school record for career goals and Lily Ghere broke the mark for assists in a season during a 5-0 victory over host Lincoln on Thursday evening.
Niebrugge, a junior, scored three goals to finish with 65, edging past Jessica Nichols who had set the record of 64 in 2018. Niebrugge also had two assists against Lincoln.
Ghere finished the game with two goals and two assists, giving the sophomore 18 for the season – one better than the previous assist mark owned by Nichols and Saige Overton, who each had 17 in 2018.
Mattoon also earned the No. 3 seed in the IHSA Class 2A Regionals, which are set to begin at the end of the month. The pairings, dates, times and locations will be released later today.
Mattoon started the scoring in the 17th minute when Ghere scored on a pass from Niebrugge. Ghere returned the favor in the 19th minute when she crossed the ball to Niebrugge, who put the ball in the back of the net.
Ghere assisted Niebrugge again in the 37th minute. The Green Wave led 3-0 at halftime.
Niebrugge completed her hat trick in the 63rd minute when Taylor Kovach sent a pass over the Lincoln defense.
And Ghere completed the scoring with 2 seconds left in the game when she finished a cross from Niebrugge.
Mattoon, which improved to 11-3 overall and 6-2 in the Apollo Conference, next plays Monday at Monticello.
