After a slow start, Mattoon girls soccer defeated Warrensburg-Latham 5-1 on Monday night at the Mattoon High School soccer field.
The game was really tight for the first 20 minutes until Gabby Ray scored on a corner kick from Lillian Ghere.
After that, the game opened up and both teams had several scoring chances. Ghere finished the first half by scoring on a cross by Callan Haldorsen to make it 2-0 at halftime.
Warrensburg controlled the first 15 minutes of the second half and scored to close within one goal.
Then, Mattoon’s offense came alive in an 11-minute span to score three unanswered goals to secure the victory.

Ghere scored her second goal of the game on a pass from Piper Sanders at the 60th minute. Sanders followed that up with a goal of her own assisted by Ghere just five minutes later.
Faith Niebrugge finished off the scoring on a give-and-go combination with Ray. Anabelle Lee was very active in goal, recording eight saves to preserve the win.
Mattoon, now 3-2, returns to action at home Tuesday in a conference game against Lincoln. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
