Charleston used a strong running game and a highly efficient passing attack to beat Taylorville 28-6 on the road Saturday night. It was the second straight win for the Trojans in this series.
Spour rushed for 157 yards and scored three times while Jack Nelson was efficient in the passing game, going 11-14 with 111 yards and a touchdown.
Charleston took the opening kickoff at the 37-yard line to start the game. However, the Trojans went three and out and punted the ball away. The Tornadoes had their opening drive start at the 39, gaining 22 yards before turning the ball over on downs.
After moving the ball to their own 48 on the first play on the next series for Charleston, Cory Spour broke loose on the left side for an apparent 52-yard touchdown that was called back because of a penalty. The Trojans got the ball to the Taylorville 42 and faced fourth-and-4. Jack Nelson dropped back to pass and was hit as he threw it. Sam Schuette caught ball in the middle of the field and ran in for the first score of the game to make it 7-0.
Schuette made things happen on the defensive side on the next possession. Taylorville quarterback Kamren Heimsness dropped back to pass and overshot his receiver. Schuette picked it off and Charleston was in business again with the ball at the Tornadoes’ 43-yard line. The Trojans could not take advantage of the good field position and ending up punting the ball away.
Taylorville took the ball over and mounted a 12-play drive that covered 55 yards. The drive stalled at the Charleston 33 when the Tornadoes lost the ball on downs again. The Trojans were able to take the ball 67 yards on 11 plays for a score as Spour ran it in from 1 yard out. It was the second time in the game they scored on a fourth-down conversion, making it 14-0.
Taylorville came out on a mission to begin the second half. Primarily using a good ground game, they took over six minutes off the clock before Heimsness scored on a one yard quarterback sneak to make the score 14-6.
Charleston did not take long to answer – just over three minutes. Spour ran it in from 7 yards out after the Trojans started at their own 46 yard line.
Schuette made it happen again for Charleston on the next play from scrimmage for the Tornadoes. After keeping the ball on the ground in the first possession of the second half, Heimsness dropped back to pass, overthrew his receiver, and Schuette had his second pick of the game.
With 10 minutes left in the game, Spour scored his third touchdown on a 5-yard run.
With his two interceptions tonight, Schuette now has six on the season to go along with two fumble recoveries.
Charleston (3-2) faces Mattoon at 7 p.m. in its final game at EIU’s O’Brien Field in the annual Coles County Clash. Just a reminder that tickets are only available at the respective schools. There will not be any tickets sold at the gate.
