Aly Abou-Zaid scored with eight minutes remaining to hand Charleston a tie with Mahomet, 2-2, in Apollo Conference boys soccer action Saturday.

Charleston had taken a lead 10 minutes into the game when Blake Garrett fired in a shot on an assist from Carter Gordon for his 12th goal of the season.

But Mahomet tied the score with 35 seconds left in the first half.

Mahomet went ahead 25 minutes into the second half despite a diving save by goalkeeper Alex Dow. But the ball rebounded off the post, allowing a Mahomet player to knock it in for the 2-1 lead.

Abou-Zaid scored the tying goal, his third of the season, off a pass from Marc Asejo. Charleston had another chance on goal late in the game, but couldn’t capitalize.

Dow had six saves overall.

“We played a great game and, I think, surprised Mahomet a bit, given how the last match went,” Trojans coach Josh Garrett said. “Our defensive effort was phenomenal and Alex had a great game in goal. The kids left everything on the field and that’s all we can ever ask.”

Charleston is now 5-7-3.
