Teutopolis went on a 13-4 run to end the third quarter, extending its lead to 50-42 before closing with a strong fourth quarter for a 67-50 win over Charleston on Friday night at Baker Gym.
The Wooden Shoes (10-4) outscored the Trojans 17-8 in the final quarter, imposing their will inside on the glass.
“They were able to get second and third shots,” Charleston coach Brad Oakley said. “We also had a few possessions offensively where we didn’t move the ball and make sure we got a good shot.”
Neither team could find its offense early, as Charleston (2-7) led by just 10-9 after the first quarter. But both teams found their rhythms in the second half, combining for 36 points. Teutopolis guard Evan Wermert scored 15 of his team’s 19 points in the second quarter, including three 3-pointers.
“It took some pressure off them,” Oakley said. “They played more free at the offensive end. We try to take away as much space as we can and try to make him feel uncomfortable. But, for a while, he was on such a streak that it was tough to defend.”
Wermert carried the load offensively for the Wooden Shoes throughout the game, finishing with 29 points. None of his teammates reached double-figures.
Still, Charleston trailed only 28-27 at the half despite Wermert’s scoring barrage.
Charleston guard Cory Spour often ran the floor in transition. Spour scored only nine points, but he created a number of easy looks for his teammates.
“We want to get baskets in transition,” Oakley said. “Getting easy baskets is the way you want to play. The problem is, you also want to be under control and know when to and when not to (run in transition).”
Sam Bickford, William Applegate, and Jacksen Braun all scored in double-figures for the Trojans, with Bickford leading the way with 12.
It was a frustrating result for Charleston, who remained competitive throughout and looked to earn its third victory.
“We played a good 28 minutes,” Oakley said. “We have to play 32 minutes to give ourselves a chance to win the game.”
