Charleston and Mattoon golf teams will travel to participate in the Mt. Zion Invite boys golf event today, which will feature 10 teams at Red Trail Golf Course. Tee time is set for 1 p.m.

Charleston, Mattoon, Mt. Zion, Sullivan, Effingham, Bement, Lincoln, Maroa-Forsyth, St. Teresa, Clinton, and Okaw Valley will be competing.

Charleston is coming off a dual victory over Olney Richland. Patrick Phillips (42) led the way at Charleston Country Club. Charleston beat Shelbyville, Central A&M and Altamont in a quad meet at Eagle Creek Golf Course on Thursday.

Sophomore Blaine Powers has been on a roll. Last Thursday, Powers led Mattoon with a 3-over-39 to help Mattoon beat St. Anthony and Effingham. Stewart Druin and Meade Johnson each had a 41, while Colton Romin and Evan Diedrich finished with 42s at Mattoon Country Club’s front nine.

Mt. Zion

In a recent matchup last week, Mount Zion defeated Lincoln at Lincoln Elks Club by a narrow margin. Recently, Mount Zion won a quadrangular meet at South Side Country Club in Decatur. Mt. Zion (169) defeated Effingham (177), Taylorville (187), and Shelbyville (220).

The Braves were led by Hansen (40), Gronne (42), Pullen (43), Taylor (44), Driskoll (48), and Griffith (51).

Lincoln lost to Mt. Zion in a tiebreaker. At the Elks Club, senior Dylan Singleton was the medalist with a score of par-35. Behind him, senior Lucas Koncyk (42) and junior Andre Graue (42) were next on the scoring list, while senior Adam Dean carded a 45.

Effingham lost to Mattoon last week, 163-194. Effingham has lost to Charleston and Mt. Zion as well this season. Ryker Schneider led Effingham at Mattoon with a score of 45. Max Wolfer was close behind with a score of 47.

Drew Rogers has been a staple member of Sullivan’s fifth-place and 11th-place state teams the past two seasons. A few months ago, Rogers placed third in the junior/senior division at the Central Illinois Golf League Summer Championship at the Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington. He will likely be in competition for a top place at the invite.

St. Teresa

As a team, St. Teresa placed fifth at the Okaw Valley Regional. Sophomore Cody Dodson was one of the top contenders at the Regional, finishing just four strokes away from Drew Rogers for medalist. As a freshman, Dodson eventually qualified for the state tournament.

Okaw Valley

Last year, Okaw Valley placed eighth at the Okaw Valley Regional. Junior Miles Harlin advanced as an individual to the Sectional.

Clinton owns losses to Maroa-Forsyth, Monticello and Bement on the season. Clinton is led by Aiden Toohill and Mason Walker, who each shot 46 on their home course earlier in the season.

Tyler Davis leads the team. Earlier this season, the Trojans played at the Clinton Country Club where Davis finished with a 2-under-33.

Bement’s Zach Courson leads the team, shooting a 43 at Clinton earlier in the season. Senior Luke Rogers qualified for the IHSA Sectional last year, advancing as the final individual qualifier.
