Colton Romine fired a 1-under 35 to lead Mattoon to a dual-match victory over Champaign Centennial in boys golf action Thursday.

Romine birdied the 530-yard par-5 No. 15 and shot even for the other eight holes on the back nine at Mattoon Country Club.

“He played a solid and steady round,” Mattoon coach Bill Behrends said. “He managed the course well and played to his strengths.”

Stewart Druin carded a 42, followed by Blaine Powers (43) and Meade Johnson (44) for the Green Wave’s 164 total, which was 11 strokes better than the Chargers.

Other Mattoon scores: James Shamdin 46, Evan Diedrich 52, Colton Probst 52, Braxton Ochsenbein 61.

Centennial scores: Cam McMullen 38, Griffin Doyle 43, Liam Dee 46, Keith Gardner 48, Jacob Stephens 48, Walker Smith 51, Ashten Cafarelli 52, Max Singer 55.

Charleston’s Smith posts low score in tri-match

Preston Smith earned medalist honors and Charleston won both matches in a tri-match held at Charleston Country Club on Thursday.

Smith carded 39 across the front nine holes, one stroke better than teammates Logan Beals and Payton Daugherty. Cade Landrus and Patrick Phillips each shot 42 to help the Trojans finish at 163 total strokes. Mahomet carded 177, followed by Effingham at 192.
