Mattoon’s Brock Davee (right) and Newton’s Nick Zwilling already led by a large margin at the mile mark Thursday at EIU’s Panther Trail.

Brock Davee displayed the swagger he promised before the season began when he said he could become one of the top two runners in the conference and also break 15 minutes after only a season of cross country running under his proverbial belt.

Of course, that first season was pretty impressive.

Davee cracked the 17-minute mark seven times, including a personal best 16 minutes, 7.90 second at the St. Anthony XC Classic, finished top 10 in 10 races, took fourth in the Apollo Conference and advanced to sectionals, missing a state berth by 22 seconds.

“I feel like I have the ability to drop massive time this year,” Davee told Kyle Daubs last month. “I know this is a bold statement, but I know if I keep it up, I can get high 14:50s. That’s my goal. I want to break 15-minutes.”

Times were slower on a humid Thursday evening across EIU’s Panther Trail, but the Mattoon junior outlasted Newton’s Nick Zwilling to clock in at 16:40.87 to win the tri-meet against the Eagles and Charleston. Zwilling finished nearly seven seconds later in 16:48.07.

Davee finishes strong for the win.

Davee and Zwilling pretty much ran by themselves across the three-mile, mostly gravel trail, going side by side until about the final half-mile. With about 500 yards left, Davee kicked it in around the pond to slowly break away and extend his lead for the victory.

The two completed the first mile in less than five minutes, leaving the field behind early. No other runner finished within a minute. Mattoon’s Sam Ferrar took third in 18:06.75, followed by Charleston’s Luca Carcasi (18:17.97) and Mattoon’s Trent Hettinger (18:22.83).

Mattoon took first in team scoring, compiling 24 points, followed by Newton (38) and Charleston (68).
