Sophomore Stewart Druin broke 80 for the first time, firing a 5-over 77 that helped lead the Mattoon boys golf team past five other teams at the 6,800-yard University of Illinois Orange course Monday.
Colton Romine, a senior, shot 78, followed by sophomore Blaine Powers (80) and senior Meade Johnson (82) for Mattoon’s 317 stroke total, four better than runner-up Monticello.
“We managed the course well and had several birdies,” Mattoon coach Bill Behrends said. “This score was lower than any of their totals from last season, and they were excited. I feel like it bodes well for the rest of the season.”
Mattoon takes on Charleston at 4 p.m. today at Meadowview Golf Course.
