Seven local wrestlers from Charleston and Mattoon advanced into today’s semifinals in the IHSA Class 2A sectional tournament in Mascoutah on Friday. And several others still have a chance to battle back to qualify for the state tournament.

Mattoon posted the most match points Friday, compiling 46, two more than Marion and six more than Waterloo. The Green Wave have already secured a berth in the IHSA state dual meet championship, which is set to start the week after IHSA state individuals, by winning the regional team title last weekend. The Green Wave also recorded the second-most pins (six) among wrestlers on 26 teams.

The Apollo Conference boasts the largest number of entrants in the sectional meet. Lincoln qualified the most with 12, followed by both Mattoon and Mahomet at 11 apiece. The Green Wave beat both of these squads in finishing the conference season undefeated.

Here’s the status of area wrestlers headed into semifinals today.

113 – Mattoon junior Coby Haney (30-1) recorded a pin 3:50 into his quarterfinal match to advance to face Bloomington’s Chad Bellis (47-3) in the semifinals.

120 – Mattoon junior Ricky Wright (19-8) registered a win by technical fall to reach the semifinals, where he will match up with East St. Louis’s Melvin Rogers (38-9).

126 – Charleston senior Trey Pearcy (38-3) won twice by decision to land a spot opposite Glenwood’s Grant Chrisman (32-4) in the semifinals.

132 – Mattoon sophomore Kiefer Duncan (21-4) edged his opponent, 5-4, to advance into a semifinal against Jacksonville’s Tim Welsh (30-6)

138 – Mattoon junior Jeremiah Jones (23-5) posted two pins, in 4:31 and 1:34, to qualify to face Bloomington’s Ryan Gardner (48-5) in the semifinals.

152 – Mattoon senior Hayden Stanley (17-4) recorded a pin and a decision to move on to face Triad’s Garrett Bakarich (38-1) in another semifinal match.

195 – Charleston senior Brayden Doyle (37-3) pinned his quarterfinal opponent in 4:43 to advance to face Waterloo’s Jordan Summers (27-4) in a semifinal match.

Several other local wrestlers will need to battle back through the losers bracket to earn one of the four spots in each weight class to qualify for next weekend’s state tournament in Champaign.

Mattoon sophomore Brady Foster (27-3) might have been the highest rated wrestler to fall Friday, losing an 8-4 decision in the quarterfinals to Morton’s Connor Kidd (32-9). He won the regional title at 106 last week. Gavin Jones, who won the regional title at 160, lost 11-6 in the second round. They both will need to win three successive matches Saturday to reach the state tournament.

Several of their teammates are also fighting for a state berth – all freshmen: Logan Blackburn (126 pounds), Stewart Druin (145), Kyus Root (170) and Leo Meyer (195).

Three Charleston wrestlers will grapple for a state berth as well – junior Tyler Thompson (152) and freshman Wyatt Kennedy (220).
