Sam Bradbury made all 10 shots against Lawrenceville on Friday for Mattoon.

Charleston scrambled to beat Dixon, 69-66, in its consolation game Friday night behind a 21-point performance from sophomore Jaksen Braun and an explosive 18-8 third quarter.

The Trojans will play Lawrenceville, which beat Mattoon, 75-72, in an 11:30 a.m. game that decides 13th and 14th place in the 16-team tournament. The Green Wave play Dixon at 10 a.m. to determine the final two spots. Both games will be played in the Effingham High auxiliary gym.

The Trojans held off Dixon in the fourth quarter to earn their first win Friday evening in the Effingham-Teutopolis Christmas Classic.

Braun made seven-of-nine field goals, two of three 3-point attempts and had seven rebounds. Sam Bickford snared eight rebounds for the second successive game, adding seven points.

In a morning game, Antioch hit a shot in the final seconds to edge Charleston, 44-43. Isaac Miller made three 3-pointers and scored 17 points to lead the Trojans, who trailed Antioch by two points entering the final quarter. Bickford grabbed eight rebounds and scored five.

“The kids kept battling,” Charleston coach Brad Oakley said.

Mattoon, meanwhile, battled down the stretch in both games Friday. In the morning, Mattoon exchanged leads with St. Anthony in the fourth quarter before heading into an overtime in which the Green Wave were outscored 11-4 for the 70-63 loss.

CamRon Thomas hit all four 3-point attempts and scored a team-high 18 points while Dalton Compton made four-of-six 3-pointers to contribute 13. Jaylen Middleton and Sam Bradbury grabbed six rebounds apiece.

Sam Bradbury made all 10 field-goal attempts and five-of-seven free throws to score 25 points, and Thomas made four more 3-pointers to score 24 points in the afternoon game. But Mattoon could not close out for the win against Lawrenceville.

“In both games, we had leads in the fourth quarter,” Mattoon coach Ryan Ghere said. “Too many turnovers down the stretch in both games. Both games were back and forth the entire second half. Our kids really played hard. We just need to find a way to win these type of games.”
