Effingham made only four field goals in the final quarter but converted 16 of 17 free throws to rally past Mattoon, 64-58, in the St. Anthony Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament third-place game on Saturday night.

The Flaming Hearts made 22 of 30 free-throw attempts overall, nearly three times more than Mattoon’s 11 attempts. Dalton Compton and Alex Yardley each fouled out.

Mattoon had taken charge in the third quarter, outscoring Effingham 18-8 to go ahead 44-39 by spreading the ball around. Guard Meade Johnson and center Samuel Bradbury each scored four points in the quarter while Compton hit a 3-pointer, Josiah Morton and Cam’Ron Thomas each made field goals, Yardley converted two free throws and Mason Wright had one.

Johnson scored a team-high 17 points, including one 3-pointer, and Compton made three 3-pointers for 13 points.

Mattoon faces Effingham again next Friday for an Apollo Conference game that is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
