Mattoon’s Mallory Ramage scored 11 points, and Delainey Bryant and Jordan Sapp had four apiece in an explosive first quarter Friday night that enabled the Green Wave to rout Okaw Valley, 70-33, in the Pana Thanksgiving girls basketball tournament.

Mattoon, which registered 13 steals, outscored Okaw 25-4 in the opening quarter and then slowly increased its lead.

The Green Wave also blocked two shots and grabbed 22 rebounds in the run-away, season-opening win in which all 11 players scored.

“It was a great start to the season,” Mattoon coach Amanda Aydt said. “The hard work in practice paid off tonight. There was good energy and effort from everyone. It was a great team win.”

Ramage scored 25 points overall in roughly three quarters of action behind three 3-pointers, and she also recorded four rebounds, four steals and four assists. Faith Niebrugge scored 12, and Xylia Greeson and Delainey Bryant added eight and seven points, respectively. Paige Farmer tied for a game-high four rebounds.

Mattoon continues its pool-play action Saturday when it faces Centralia at 11:30 a.m. at Pana Junior High and Brownstown/St Elmo at Pana High School at 4:30 p.m.

The semifinals and finals are scheduled for Nov. 29-30.
