We chatted with Mattoon Girls Basketball coach Amanda Aydt to address the upcoming season. Aydt, in entering her sixth season, has compiled a 94-56 record that includes a 30-2 mark and regional title in 2016-17. The Green Wave finished 16-15 last season led, in part, by Mallory Ramage, who averaged 19.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game to earn honorable mention for the Class 3A all-state team. Mattoon kicks off its season Nov. 22 at the Pana Holiday Tournament.

Mallory Ramage averaged 19.4 points last season.

CCS:     How would rate the team right now during pre-season?

AYDT: This is a great group of girls who are working really hard and are fun to coach.

CCS:     Do you set season goals?

AYDT: Our motto is “Play Hard and Have Fun.” We are looking to get better every day.

CCS:     Individually who has stood out so far?

AYDT: We have Mallory Ramage who is returning and she was our leading scorer last year.  She is an outstanding player and makes everyone around her better.  She understands the game of basketball and makes the right decisions.  She is an all-around great player.  Delainey Bryant was our second-leading scorer last year.  She does well at attacking the basket and looking for her shot when she is open.  She plays well on the defensive end as well.  Jordan Sapp, Hallie Niemerg, and Peyton Gill, our seniors, are showing great leadership and leading by example.  Kylie Haacke and Chloe Pruitt can shoot from the outside and Faith Niebrugge plays aggressively and plays excellent defense.  All the players on our roster, including Xylia Greeson, Anna Jurka, and Paige Farmer, were on varsity by the end of last season.

CCS:      What style of tempo do you want to use this year?

AYDT: We are looking to push the ball up the floor and score some points in transition.  If we don’t have anything, then we will pull it out and set up our offense.

CCS:      What do you expect at the Pana tourney to start the season?

AYDT: We are excited to start playing.  It will be nice to play some games and see what we need to work on.

CCS:     Thoughts on this year’s Apollo conference teams?

AYDT:  We have a tough schedule and play in a tough conference.  I think there will be a lot of great basketball games.

CCS:     When will you settle on a starting five?

AYDT:  The starting five is never set in stone.  The girls are constantly working for a starting spot.  It could also change depending on who we play and the potential matchups.

CCS:     Who are your team leaders?

AYDT: The seniors are doing an excellent job of being vocal and leading by example. We are really excited about this season.
