Mattoon’s James Shamdin shot 82 in Friday’s opening round of the state golf tourney.

Mattoon’s Meade Johnson and Charleston’s Pierson Smith each fired 9-over 80s Friday at the IHSA Class 2A state golf tournament, missing the cut for Saturday’s second round by one stroke.

Charleston, the two-time defending state golf champ, failed to qualify for today’s second round after having won the regional and taking third in the sectional earlier this week. Mattoon, which took second in both the regional and sectional tournaments, also did not advance among the top eight teams, finishing 11th at the Illinois State Course in Normal.

Regional golf champion Blake Wolfe missed the cut by three strokes, shooting an 82 after struggling on the front nine, where he carded triple-bogeys on successive holes, Nos. 4-5. Wolfe had started strong by earning birdies on the par-5 No. 2 and the par-4 No. 3. He finished with a solid 3-over 38 on the back nine.

Johnson also started strongly by carding birdies on Nos. 1 and 3, both par-4s, but he carded a double-bogey 6 on the par-4 No. 9. He finished with a birdie on the par-3 No. 17 and on the par-4 18th, his fifth across the back nine.

Smith was steady across the par-71 course, shooting 40s on both the front and back and registering eight pars, a birdie and only one double-bogey to tie for 49th overall with Johnson.
