Charleston’s Jordan Socarras converts the third of his four PATS on Friday night.

Charleston used a potent passing attack to beat Taylorville in Apollo Conference football at Trojan Hill, 28-10, for the program’s first win at home since Oct. 14, 2016.

The Trojans rang the bell at the hill after a home win for the first time in three years.  Their last win at home was over Salem 20-14.

Cheney threw for a career-high 302 yards and Spour set a new high with 150 yards receiving.  Charleston (3-5 overall, 2-4 in the Apollo Conference) would take advantage of their opportunities on third down, converting six of eight.

Charleston’s Brayden Rennels catches a pass from Nick Cheney, and cuts through the Taylorville defense for a 28-yard scoring play, in the second quarter that made it 21-3 on Friday night.

Taylorville took the lead a few minutes into the game after the Tornadoes marched down the field on the opening possession.

Taylorville (5-3, 3-3) was able to get the ball to the 6-yard-line before the drive stalled and Taylor Heimsness kicked a 23-yard field goal to make it 3-0.

The Tornadoes, who have now lost three straight games, would never lead again the remainder of the game.

Cory Spour returned the ensuing kickoff 37 yards to put Charleston in good field position.  Seven plays later, Spour scored a touchdown on a 7-yard run to make it 7-3.

Taylorville ground out an 11-play drive on its next possession before turning over possession when CHS stopped them on fourth down.

That is when Spour struck again.  This time the junior scored on the next play –– a 79-yard pass from Nick Cheney to put Charleston ahead, 14-3.

After forcing a Taylorville punt, the Trojans were able to score again when Cheney hit Brayden Rennels on a 28-yard pass to give Charleston a 21-3 lead.

CHS’s Nick Cheney scrambles and completes a pass to Sam Schuette in the 2nd quarter Friday.

The Trojans came up with a sack and a fumble by quarterback Caden Mileham to take the ball over with 4:09 left in the second quarter.  But a fumble by Brayden Doyle ended the drive deep in Taylorville’s territory.

The Tornadoes responded by marching down the field to the Trojans’ 3-yard-line before Ty Coartney intercepted a Mileham pass to end the threat.

Charleston started the second half with the ball, but, on the second play from scrimmage, Cheney was intercepted on a tipped pass.  Taylorville took advantage of the pick, scoring on a 21-yard completion from Mileham to his younger brother Ethan to pull within 21-10.

Charleston muffed the ensuing kickoff, giving the Tornadoes great field position at the Trojans’ 27-yard line.  Taylorville, though, could not take advantage and turned the ball over on downs after six plays.

After the Trojans failed on a fourth-down conversion attempt, and a Taylorville punt, Charleston increased its advantage. It was Spour finding the end zone for a third time on a 10-yard pass from Cheney to make it 28-10.

Taylorville turned over the ball on downs the final two times it had possession. The Tornadoes were hurt in the game by penalties, committing 12.

The Trojans will finish the season at home against Highland on Friday.
