A red card led to Mattoon’s downfall in a conference game against Mahomet on Tuesday night.
The Green Wave led 3-1 at halftime.
But Mahomet (6-2-1) came out strong in the second half, scoring two goals in a three-minute span to tie the score at 3.
Five minutes later, a Mattoon defender received a red card on a foul just outside the penalty box, which forced the Green Wave to play with 10 players the remainder of the game.
After that, Mahomet was too much for the short-handed Green Wave to handle and, as a result, the Bulldogs outscored Mattoon 4-1 the rest of the way in the 7-4 loss. Shane Ghere scored the final goal for Mattoon on an assist from Andrew Brinkshroeder.
Mattoon opened the scoring in the ninth minute of the game on a header by Quincy Hamilton off a Gavin Gonzalez cross.
Mahomet tied the game in the 23rd minute. Mattoon answered with a Jakob Weder goal 50 seconds later. Mason Wright put the Greenwave ahead 3-1 on a free kick from about 30 yards from goal.
Mattoon next plays host to Taylorville at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
