Keren Masangu twice drilled balls set by teammates past Taylorville’s defenders, tipped another over the net and then blocked a shot during the final stretch in the first set to lead Charleston to a victory in the opener, 25-17.

But Charleston struggled thereafter.

During the next two sets, the Trojans had more difficulty cleanly returning serves and suffered from multiple unforced errors. As a result, Charleston lost an Apollo Conference match at Baker gym, 25-17, 19-25, 19-25.

The Trojans fell behind early in the third set before rallying late to nearly stave off the defeat. After Taylorville won five straight points to go ahead 20-13, Charleston responded with a 5-1 run of their own buoyed by kills from Katarina Blase and Kaleigh Wilson along with a team block at the net to move within 21-18.

But Taylorville then relied on a deflection, a block and mis-hit return by Charleston to close out the match, 25-19.

The Trojans play in an invitational in Shelbyville this weekend.
