Alex Stout swept the shot put and discus and Charleston set 10 personal-bests to finish fifth out of 18 teams in the Newton Eagle boys track and field invitational Friday.

Stout flung the discus 43.5 meters, roughly 142 feet, 6 inches, to take first. The Trojans senior also heaved the shot put 14.85 meters, or roughly 48 feet, 5 inches for another win.

Plus, CHS’s Blake Homann set another PR in the 3,200 meters, clocking 10 minutes, 13.20 seconds to finish third.

Charleston finished fifth among the varsity events Friday night. Newton, though, combined the scores of the freshmen and sophomore events to offer a different overall standings where CHS took fourth, behind St. Teresa, Newton and Olney.

“We competed hard had a couple miscues, but persevered,” CHS boys track coach Alexander Koebele said. “Alex again was the man doubling up in the shot and discus.”

Grant Kattenbraker, meanwhile, took third in the pole vault at 3.51 meters, Caleb Oakley took sixth in the 100 high hurdles in 17.68 seconds, and Ethan McBride finished fifth in the long jump, followed by Jeremiah Hayes.

McBride also took fifth in the triple jump, one spot behind Mattoon’s Dylan Sledge, who soared 12.34 meters.

Mattoon’s Hayden Gordon, Cale Kimbro, Andy Karpus and Deaden Arnold clocked 44,68 to take fourth in the 4×100 relay while junior James Moore took fifth in the 300 hurdles in 44.4 seconds.

Arnold, Sawyer Kirts, Karpus and Kimbro finished fifth in the 4×200 relay in 1:35.15 while Kirts, Gordon, Moore and Karpus ran 3:45.82 to take fifth in the 4×400.
