The brackets are out for the Highland Sectional tournament for Class 2A wrestling. Ten Mattoon Green Wave wrestlers and one Charleston Trojan will represent Coles County with aspirations of getting to the state tournament. With the outlook for these wrestlers out, let’s take a look at the brackets.
Tristan Porter (29-10) will take on Cameron Haake (31-11) of Centralia. Porter reached the Regional Championship before losing by fall.
Vincent Gibson (28-9) received a first-round bye. He will take on the winner of Max Wade (37-5) of Marion and Javier Enriquez-Lynd (18-14) of Bloomington. The sophomore pinned his opponents in both of his matches to capture the 120-pound title.
Korbin Bateman (41-1) received a first-round bye. He will take on the winner of Caleb Scott (32-9) of Bethalto Civic Memorial and Lane Griffin (19-18) of Centralia. Bateman needed less than a minute to win both of his matches to win the 126-pound championship.
Ben Capitosti (38-6) received a first-round bye. He will take on the winner of Donovan Lewis (26-18) and Braden Rowe (23-14) of Triad. Capitosti received a first-round bye after posting a 16-5 major decision and 8-3 decision to claim the 138-pound title.
Aidan Blackburn (35-5) received a first-round bye. He will take on the winner of Jackson Deutch (31-17) of Waterloo and Marquen Shaw (15-10) of Danville. Blackburn pinned a semifinal opponent with 70 seconds before winning the 145-pound title with 3:12 left in the championship match of the championship.
Ean Freeman (13-8) will take on Maize Cammack (14-13) of Mount Vernon. Freeman battled back to make the Sectional after losing in the semifinals and relied on back-to-back pins to claim the consolation final for third place.
Jason Skocy (32-14) will take on Asher Kotowski (23-12) of Champaign Central. Skocy won his semifinal 5-0 but was pinned in the championship match to finish second.
Blaine Powell (15-14) will take on Cale Hillard (23-19) of Mahomet-Seymour. Howell battled back after a semifinal loss with back to back pins to advance with the consolation final win.
T.J. Owens (29-19) will take on Jackson O’Connor (18-9) of Springfield. Owens posted a pin in the semifinal before losing by pin in the championship.
Marcellx Boling (18-12) will be the lone Charleston representative. Boling will take on Christopher Hull (15-10) of Southeast. Boling wrestled back to claim the consolation title. After a 2-1 double overtime loss, Boling pinned one opponent and then posted a 10-7 decision.
Meyer (39-4) will wrestle Hunter Reid (24-17) of Springfield. Meyer posted a pin in his first match before being pinned in the championship match.
