Despite losing three of the last four games, Mattoon has remained competitive and hopes to finish the regular season with a winning record. Since January 5, the Green Wave are 4-6, but of those six losses, four losses were by as many as six points. With four games left in the regular season, the 12-14 Green Wave have a chance to close out the regular season with a winning record if the team can win three of their next four games.
At least one game would have to come as an upset. Mattoon plays Mount Zion (19-8) tonight. With that said, Mattoon played Mount Zion to a 42-38 loss on December 16th. Denying Mount Zion their 20th win of the season would be huge as Mattoon also has to play state-ranked Paris next week. Mount Zino is led by All-Apollo First Team member Denver Anderson, who is averaging an impressive 18.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 3.4 steals per game.
On Saturday, Mattoon will challenge Sullivan on the road. Sullivan is 9-17 on the season and 1-4 in the Central Illinois Conference, which is good for sixth place. Sullivan is led by Izzabela Hay’s 9.8 points and 4.2 rebounds. Right behind her is sophomore Addison Minor, averaging 8.8 points and 7.0 rebounds.
Paris, the No. 10 ranked team in Class 2A, will host Mattoon next Monday. Paris is 23-3 on the season and 5-1 in the Little Illini Conference, a 40-38 upset win by Robinson. Closing out the regular season, Mattoon will travel to play 2-21 Charleston on the road.
