After creating a new e-mail account to try seven days free on Newspaper Archives, the complete history of the Mattoon High School Invitational is complete. The girls’ basketball tournament officially has all of the parts dating back to 1979. That includes all championship games, tourney MVPs, and more.

The All-Tournament team goes back before 1992 but there are not enough consistent findings to show the all-tournament teams before this tournament; however, all Tournament MVPs go back to the first time. In the beginning, the Green Wave girl’s basketball team would use this tournament to open up their season. The girls’ basketball season started later than it did before and the Green Wave’s only games in the winter would be in late December.

The tournament began as a normal tournament that featured a  championship game but the tournament shifted to a round-robin format from 1984-88. The team shifted to the original format in 1989 and has featured a championship game since then.

Mattoon has won their own tournament a record 17 times. The Green Wave has made the championship game of the tournament 25 times, including the last five tournaments held. Galesburg owns the next highest amount of championships with four while Olney and Sullivan are third with three titles.

Tournament MVPs

The Tournament MVP has been around since the tournament began in 1979. Only once has the award been shared. That came in 1986 when Barb Blume and Stephanie Newman were named Co-MVPs. One time, the tournament did not award an individual MVP. In 1984, the Mattoon Team was named the MVP because the tournament committee could not specifically pick one individual from the tournament.

Five players have won the Tournament MVP two times. Blume won the award in 1986 and 1987. Allyson Glazebrook of Sullivan won the award in 1993 and 1994. Kara Donnell of Mattoon won the award in 1999 and 2000. Katie Meador of Salem won the award in 2010 and 2011. Finally, Mallory Ramge won the award in 2019 and 2021. Had COVID-19 not wiped away most of her junior season, she might have been the first player to ever win the award three times.
