The Charleston Trojans were defeated 74-17 by the Effingham Hearts on Tuesday at Baker Gym in the Charleston Holiday Tournament.
Effingham improves to 3-0 in the tournament while Charleston falls to 0-2.
Effingham dominated the first quarter, scoring 21 points before Charleston sophomore Anny Logsdon found the basket with 20 seconds left, putting Charleston on the board.
In the second quarter, Anny Logsdon would find the basket again as did junior Megan Myerscough. The second quarter would in a frenzy as freshman Elizabeth Swies drained a 3 and then Charleston would quickly get a steal and lob one from the half-court as the buzzer indicated the end of the first half.
Swies and Logsdon would each score two-pointers again in the third quarter. Freshman Maggie Englum would make a free throw to give the Trojans 14 points as they entered the fourth quarter with a running clock.
Englum would find the line and the basket again, scoring a free throw in the fourth quarter. With less than 20 seconds left, Englum would find the basket to score two as the Trojans fell 74-17 to Effingham.
Charleston Head Coach Shani Iberg is celebrating the small victories. “We came out with seven steals, which is the most our team has had in a game,” said Iberg.
The team also saw improvement in passing the ball and moving it in and outside of the lane to find the opportunity to make the shot.
