The 2022 Charleston Holiday Tournament got underway Monday at Baker Gym with Charleston hosting five other teams this week in a round-robin tournament.

Teutopolis, last year’s tournament champions, came out strong with a 79-10 win over Charleston.

The Wooden Shoes won the tip-off and used a full-court press and 1-1 defense to get a 7-0 lead before Charleston could get across the half-court line.

Teutopolis took advantage of a depth of experience in their starters to quickly take a decisive lead. With two minutes left in the first quarter, the starters were given a break after scoring 19 unanswered points.

Charleston freshman Maggie Englum would take advantage of a foul to connect on both of her free throws to put the Trojans on the board in the first quarter.

The Teutopolis starters would return to start the second quarter and extend the lead even more to 31-2 before getting another break with 4:30 left on the clock. The Teutopolis bench capitalized on the breakdown in the Trojans’ defense to extend the lead to 44-2 going into the half.

Charleston came out after the half and worked together to make the passes and find the openings for freshman Elizabeth Swies, freshman Maggie Englum, and sophomore Anny Logsdon to all score for the Trojans.

Sophomore Anny Logsdon would score again early in the fourth quarter, but the Wooden Shoes took the tournament opener with a final score of 79-10.

Charleston Head Coach Shani Iberg said her team is going to focus on teamwork and getting in the right headspace for tomorrow’s games.

“We are a big team on stressing teamwork, and we didn’t see a lot of that. We saw a lot of finger-pointing and not making the extra pass,” said Iberg. “We’ve been working a lot on defense, getting steals versus waiting until they catch the ball to play defense. We didn’t see a lot of that. We had a couple of steals but not as many as we should have had.”

The Trojans next play Tuesday with games against Effingham at 1:30 p.m. and Jacksonville at 6 p.m.
