Charleston knocked down 10 3-pointers overall and 13 free throws in the fourth quarter to top Effingham 73-58 in an Apollo Conference boys basketball game Thursday night.

Effingham, previously unbeaten in the conference, drops to 3-1 and 4-7 overall. CHS improves to 3-4 and 2-3 in the conference.

The Trojans did not miss a free throw in the fourth quarter – and converted 17 of 18 overall, all in the second half. Brett Spour converted all six of his FT attempts in the quarter while Luke Bonnstetter made four-of-four down the stretch.

“Those free throws late were big,” CHS coach A.J. Alexander said.

Bonnstetter, who also hit three 3s, scored 15 points, two fewer than James Hess who led the team with 17 points. Will Applegate scored 16 while Caleb Oakley added 13.

CHS, which had been shooting 36.9% from beyond the arc, hit 10-of-22 3-pointers on Thursday, a 45% conversion rate.

Spour, who also hit a 3-pointer, scored all nine of his points in a fourth quarter where Charleston extended a seven-point lead. The Trojans led 31-29 at halftime and 50-43 through three quarters.

“The guys put together a complete game through all four quarters – offensively and defensively,” said Alexander. “I’m extremely proud of their energy and execution all game. We’ll continue to keep working to improve daily and ride this momentum from last night.”
