Mattoon’s Emily Maple, Lily Ghere and Ella Conyers were named to the all-tourney team after the Green Wave knocked off Olney, 50-38, to take third place in the Pana Thanksgiving girls basketball event on Saturday.

Maple, who scored a game-high 23 points, sank 11 of 12 free-throw attempts in the second half. Ghere added 13 points while Conyers contributed eight, which included two 3-pointers.

Teygen Sewell snagged eight rebounds, while Maple and Piper Sanders had five apiece.

“We played a great game,” Mattoon coach Troy Haacke said. “Outstanding defense against a quick athletic team that can shoot the 3.”

Ghere averaged 18.6 points in the tournament, Maple posted 18.0 per game, and Conyers finished with 13.25 ppg.

Mattoon clung to a 15-11 halftime lead before outscoring Olney 17-10 in the third quarter to take a lead it never relinquished. The Green Wave made all 13 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter and hit 16 of 17 overall.

“We went on a nice run to start the third,” Haacke said. “We made big free throws down the stretch and took care of the ball. It was a great team win.”

Lincoln captured the tourney title by rolling past host Pana, 61-28, in the final Saturday night.

MHS, now 3-2, next plays at Lincoln on Friday.
