Mahomet strikes quickly, rolls past Mattoon, 47-14

Mattoon High football coach Jarad Kimbro knew his team faced some big challenges against No.3 Mahomet on Friday night.

The undefeated Bulldogs, featuring a strong passing game behind Illinois recruit Wyatt Bohm, entered the game averaging 49.4 points per game. The Mahomet defense, conversely, had only allowed 35 total points in six games.

“The players are definitely looking forward to the challenge of playing the No. 3 ranked team in the state of Illinois,” Kimbro had said before the game. “One of the best things about these kids is that they don’t shy away from a challenge.”

But the Mahomet offense proved too explosive at Gaines Field, averaging 10 yards a play in a 47-14 victory over Mattoon. The Bulldogs scored their first three TDs on drives that lasted fewer than a minute. Bohm threw for all three scores, including one for 88 yards that capped a 95-yard drive.

His 15-yard pass two minutes into the second quarter made it 40-0.

Mattoon scored once in the third and fourth quarters. Slater Trier snuck in from a yard out to cap a five-play, 70-yard drive with 6:31 left in the third quarter and Trysten Sewell ran 25 yards with 8:42 remaining in the game to culminate a five-play, 66-yard drive.

Bohm passed for four TDs overall and 272 yards on 11-of-14 passing. Quenton Rogers caught three of the scoring passes among his four total receptions for 151 yards.

Mattoon’s Owen Hawkins caught seven passes for 116 yards. Teammate Slater Trier completed 10 of 17 passes for 142 yards.

Mahomet improves to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the Apollo Conference while Mattoon drops to 1-6, 1-4.
