Mattoon’s Stewart Druin fired the lowest score Friday in the first round of the 40-team Craig Dixon Invitational.

Druin, a former Apollo Conference champ, shot 4-under 68 on the 6,745-yard Meadowview course for a two-stroke lead entering Saturday’s final round for the 36-hole event.

Druin recorded one eagle, five birdies, nine pars and three bogeys.

Teammate Madden Johnson carded a 75, tied for eighth best among the more than 225 golfers. The sophomore also had an eagle, along with two birdies, nine pars, five bogeys and a double-bogey.

Mattoon is in eighth place after posting a 319 for its four best golfers, 17 strokes behind St. Anthony and one stroke out of sixth place.

Freshman Hudson Meister posted Charleston top score of 80. The Trojans are currently in 17th place at 339.

Mattoon and Charleston will be among those teams switching to play at Mattoon Country Club for the final round. All teams play both courses.
