The duo of Tejas Zala and Ethan Bahney concluded their tennis season at state last week.

The Mattoon High School doubles team finished the state tournament 2-2. The team defeated Erik Hermansson and Erik Sarabia of Woodstock North in the first round. In the second round, the team lost to Michael Cagle and Keegan Weber of Herrin High School.

This dropped them to the second-round consolation.

There, the team defeated Tyler Luchinski and Ben Irby of Champaign Centennial. However, due to a shoulder injury suffered by Bahney in the third game, Mattoon had to forfeit their fourth match to Sam Dykeme and Collin Bittney of West Chicago Wheaton Academy.

With three points, Mattoon finished tied for 38th place in the state for Class 1A.

“I am proud of our guys and how they represented our school at State,” said MHS coach Joey Boyer. “It was a great season once again.”
