Charleston narrowly came out on top in a 61-58 victory over Taylorville Friday at Baker Gym in an Apollo Conference matchup.
After a very even first half, Charleston pulled ahead by outscoring Taylorville 21-8 in the third quarter. Taylorville did not give up and challenged Charleston’s lead, outscoring the Trojans 22-13 in the fourth quarter, but ran out of time to take over the lead.
“It was a good victory, I would have loved to finish the game a little better, obviously,” said Head Coach Cody Drone. “I thought they (Taylorville) showed a lot of heart and a lot of grit. They took away Braun for most of the game. We were able to get some good looks and they were able to get some good looks against us.”
Charleston Junior William Applegate led the Trojans in scoring with 25 points followed by seniors Grady Smitley and Jaksen Braun with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Trojans will next host East Richland High on Tuesday at Baker Gym.
