Expecting to face off in dual matches with Effingham and Taylorville, Mattoon ultimately competed in only five individual matches Thursday night.
Taylorville never showed up, forfeiting the match, and Effingham brought only several wrestlers who were able to compete.
Blame injuries and illness.
Mattoon, also facing injuries, brought enough wrestlers to post a 54-4 victory over Effingham in its first Apollo dual match of the season at Mahomet High School. Paired with the win over Taylorville, MHS is now 2-0 in the conference.
Korbin Bateman, Mick Porter, Kiefer Duncan and Aidan Blackburn pinned their opponents and Isaiah Woolcot earned a major victory, 13-2. Five other MHS wrestlers won matches by forfeit while four other matches were deemed double-forfeits.
Mattoon returns to Mahomet on Saturday for the Marty Williams Invitational and then hosts both Lincoln and Charleston next Tuesday for Senior Night.
