Grady Smitley found an opening near the free-throw line and nailed a field goal with 10.2 seconds remaining to lead Charleston to a 42-41 victory over Mahomet-Seymour in an Apollo Conference boys basketball game Friday at Baker Gym.
The Trojans are now 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the Apollo. Mahomet drops to 3-4, 1-2.
The Trojans prevented Mahomet from taking a clean shot in the final seconds.
“Crazy. Just a crazy, crazy team win,” CHS assistant coach AJ Alexander said. “I’m at a loss for words for everything else.”
Mahomet held the lead for the final minute until Smitley’s game-winning shot, but the game had remained close throughout. Mahomet held a 20-17 lead at halftime before Charleston tied the score at 38 entering the final quarter.
Senior Jaksen Braun scored a team-high 14 points while Caleb Oakley made four 3-pointers for 12.
Charleston made eight 3-pointers overall to Mahomet-Seymour’s one.
