The month of September featured some pretty spectacular performances. From school records to memorable Senior Nights, both Mattoon and Charleston fall sports programs had some nights that they will never forget. Of those nights, these five performances stand out the most.
5. Mattoon’s Special Senior Night
The Mattoon soccer program sent its five seniors out with a bang in an Apollo Conference blowout win over Effingham. The 11-0 victory saw Jared Ruiz, Quincy Hamilton, and Trent Hettinger all score two goals apiece to lead the Green Wave to a very convincing win.
4. More School Records
Angela Coe breaking school records is almost normal these days. The Charleston High School junior broke her school records in two events in early September. Coe broke eight school records last season. In the 50-yard free, Coe set a time of 23.40 seconds. Then, in the 100 backstroke, she set a new record with a time of 56.91.
3. Charleston Defends Conference Title
The Trojans defended their title by compiling a team score of 391 with all-conference performances from Stacey Zerbst and Madeline Sanders. Zerbst fired a 91 to finish second, just three strokes behind Effingham’s Ainsley Winters for medalist, while Sanders finished seventh overall.
2. Mattoon Boys Defend Title; Go Second Straight Year With Medalist
Mattoon won its second straight Apollo Conference championship, while a member of the team was the top shooter for a consecutive year. Last year’s medalist, Stewart Druin, finished All-Apollo and shot a 79 to take runner-up honors. The winner was freshman Madden Johnson, who fired a 78 to take the individual title.
1. CMS Softball Makes State
The Charleston Middle School softball team was led by standouts Raylin Cox and Ava Goble, who threw a combined two-hitter in a 4-2 win over Mt. Zion to claim the Sectional Championship. Charleston finished the year 19-4 after falling to Frankfort Hickory Creek in the Elite 8.
