Mattoon survived a tough day at the IHSA Class 2A Regional tournament at Richland Golf Club in Olney, qualifying for the final berth in next week’s sectional tournament.

The Green Wave finished with 339 strokes for its top four scorers, four behind runner-up Mt. Zion and 11 behind regional champ Paris. MHS had defeated both schools in the Apollo Conference last week.

Charleston finished 11 strokes behind Mattoon, but was able to send three players ahead based on individual score – Josh Will, who took third overall after carding an 80, along with Preston Phillips (85) and Logan Beals (89).

Stewart Druin led the Green Wave on Wednesday by placing fourth overall with an 81, followed by Blaine Powers (84), Brock Taylor (86) and Will Pullen (88).

Before the tournament, Mattoon coach Bill Behrends had said: ““This course can be frustrating, so the team that wins will be the one that is the most mentally tough. Same goes for individuals. You just have to take what the course gives you, make good decisions, do your best to execute the shot you need to hit, and accept the results.  Patience will be a key to success.”

Other Mattoon scores: Evan Diedrich (89) and Madden Johnson (91).

Other Charleston scores: Andrew Kuykendall (96), Jackson Becker (96) and Jackson Logue (99).
